It’s difficult on my end, too. I want to just show you guys all the pages I have, first because Dex did such a good job, and second, because I really really really hate waiting too, on a story I love being drawn by a great artist.
I think this story arc is very compelling, but totally unexpected from this comic. It seems really quite out of place actually. As a reader of Oglaf! and other adult comics over the years, I’m okay with the subject matter. It’s just the blatant and sudden exploitation of the character’s sexuality that has me stunned. I look forward to seeing what happens.
I’m sorry you feel it’s exploitative. We worked very hard to avoid that perception, but as a writer you can’t succeed with everyone, always. It’s hard to balance confrontation of sexuality with the potential for exploitation 🙂 I’m glad you’re willing to keep giving it a shot to see what happens.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s not a bad thing and you have no reason to feel sorry. It’s simply unexpected. I love the comic and I think writers and artists who play it safe with their work are doing everyone a disservice. So thank you!
I have a theory as to why there are so many feral children: Even though there’s this massive push to increase population and bring up the birth rate, not everyone is able or willing to raise a child. Couple this with the fact that birth control and abortion is likely either illegal or incredibly difficult to come by in this world, women who end up pregnant but don’t want to raise a child probably abandon them en masse.
But while there’s all these feral children running about, the families that have children and want them probably treat them as this valuable, rare resource, and probably pamper them like hell. So as the coming generation grows up there will likely be this massive divide between the children who had everything handed to them and the ones who had to fend for themselves.
Also, I was thinking about what life would be like for gays and lesbians in this reality–basically, is non-procreative sex taboo? But then I figured, considering artificial insemination, surrogacy, and adoption, gays and lesbians may be tolerated in this society, as long as they have children. So alongside billboards like the “Do it for the future” one, there may be a similar propaganda push targeted to the LGBT community.
…I have spent a lot of time thinking about the implications of this world, lol.
Since the feral children thing won’t get elaborated on, I can comment as to what was being thought of with that, in my brain, anyway. I saw it as monocular media viewpoint on the part of that cop. He sees one feral kid, he’s reminded of the rare, sensationalized news case of the kid who wasn’t wanted in the world where kids are so precious… he’s an average joe, in other words, seeing the miraculous in his small world.
Kids are absolute treasures in this world, truth be told, but people are still just as cynical.
As for gay/lesbian, I don’t know if it was entirely clear, but Leo was watching a hetero and a gay couple copulating a few pages back on 180… as I see it, in this world (which I too spent a lot of time sussing the realities of, because it intrigues me as a concept) they’re so desperate for children the worries about gay and lesbians and how scary and awful their sex is (to say, the homophobic ass) have all fallen by the wayside in favor of an emphasis on sex, sex, sex, anything to keep us all alive!
Though I’m sure, as in our world, there are dickheads condemning the lesbians/gays for the reproduction angle. But it flies about as much as it does here there, with the fringe whackos and bigots. At least, as I see it. The world has larger problems than sexual preference bigotry, in much the same way being anti-gay isn’t playing very well for Santorum right now when people have to put food on the table, etc.
And hey… I really respect the thought put into this. 🙂 You rock.
Yes, Kate is one of the reasons I love the comments as much as the comic at this point, because she truly thinks this stuff even deeper than than you intended, Lord BaileyMort LOL 🙂
“Wow” just does not cover this LOL As I said before, the more I’m learning, the less I seem to know 🙂
So it would seem that the question with this world is one of materials…and underpopulation…the plot thickens.
This is so fascinating a situation that the pace is starting to frustrate me. I REALLY want to know what it is with this place.
It’s difficult on my end, too. I want to just show you guys all the pages I have, first because Dex did such a good job, and second, because I really really really hate waiting too, on a story I love being drawn by a great artist.
I’m wondering where the Charlie of this universe is. For some reason I’m thinking either Leo or Billy will stumble upon him in CP.

No worries! Sometimes a risk works for folks, sometimes not, but I absolutely agree, we gotta take ’em! 🙂
