    Um…I don’t like the direction that bullet’s headed in…

Comic book physics will save them, don’t worry.

        I’m not so sure.

Wait, I thought only prime could make portals to specific places?

Oh never mind, I just remembered that they’re in the anchor universe again.

Yep! The whole point of their expedition (mutant cricket jokes aside) is to go back to the place where they have some power over their environment and see if there’s a way to salvage it.

Love the Shawshank Redemption reference in the page title. It’s my mom’s favorite movie.

It’s my favorite move, as well. If there’s anything that feels more like being put in a small box for a long time with no recognition of your essential innocence and no reward for good behavior in the face of bad people, it’s writing.

I also like to hope, perhaps naively, that I will emerge shit-stained from the light at the end of the tunnel of publication, but really, there are a lot of sisters to watch out for while I work in the library of my own creation.

I have a graffiti wall above my desk where I write shit that moves me. One of my favorite little bits is the “SO WAS NEAL” line. It very much counters “Andy did not hang himself in his cell.” written above it in bleaker times.

That line came at a particularly down time, where I realized, structurally, that this might be exactly what happened in the movie, by one read. It’s not a great ending, it’s not a happy ending, but everything we see from the point of Andy going into that cell with the rope comes from Red’s narration. If you think about it, it could be the myth he created to keep himself sane in a world that killed all hope. Andy killed himself, and so he constructed the idea of a new beginning in Zihuatenejo, and went down there knowing the truth all the same, and the reuniting we see on the beach is what he’s dreaming of on the bus, when he’s so full of hope.

Terrible, yes, but that’s the depths to which I’ve analyzed that movie.

When I was in middle school and high school, whenever I was having a rough time, my mom would always remind me to keep crawling through that shit until I reach freedom.

As a long-time role-player, one of the things I like is the realization that these portals are quite versatile tactically. Give the unwashed horde their monthly bath, block incoming attacks, and achieve a massively superior attack position. Gotta love it.
